You may think only copywriters can produce great copy but that’s a bogus myth. We’re all capable of great writing, it just takes the right mindset, focus and formula to get there.
Yes, some of us may be better at it than others but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock it. The first tip to better writing is getting unstuck. If you’ve ever suffered from a bad case of writer’s block, listen-up because these quick tips will help you crush it.
- Stop Procrastinating
That laundry pile that needs folding… ignore it. That call you need to make to the cable company… do it later. That cold coffee that needs to be heated up again…drink it. It’s time to pack up all your lame excuses and get jacked about clearing your mind.
- Word Vomit
Feel that cramp in your stomach? That’s all the ideas you can’t write about starting to overflow. The staycation is over, spit them out. Don’t worry about grammar or complete sentences, just focus on one thing – spew NOW, pretty LATER.
- Carry a Notepad
Remember that quote from John Lennon, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” it’s no different when it comes to writing copy for your business. Great ideas often come up when you’re relaxed a.k.a. not working, so be prepared and keep a writing source close by – don’t like writing things down, hit record on your phone and start talking out your thoughts instead – but when the moment hits, be ready.
- Organize your Ideas
After you’ve spewed your genius onto paper, it’s time to sit back and make sense of what you’ve done. The best way to do that is to look for patterns. You might be surprised to find repetitive words and ideas popping out all over the place. Tap into those patterns, follow them like a bloodhound. It’s in those common themes that you’ll find clarity and start stringing together sentences.
Once the flood gates are open and your copy is free flowing, keep things simple and avoid over thinking. Focus on getting your words out in the same voice you’d use chatting with your best friend over coffee. Industry jargon, buzz words and long-winded thoughts are NOT invited to this party. It’s all about simplicity and fun – we’re here for a good time, not a snore time.
